When I retired in April 2024 I honestly thought that I would take my writing seriously and blog more often. The reality is that I wrote nothing and eventually let my website subscription lapse. I was asked by the web hosting service to complete a survey late last year. To cut a long story short, I have ended up re-subscribing and starting a new website. I decided to start blogging again, although it has taken me a couple of months to actually make a start.
For my first blog on the new site, I will review the gigs we saw in 2025. We returned to some of our favourite venues and discovered some new ones. We talked to some great people up and down the country, all united by a love of live music.
I love retirement. I wish that I could describe a life of constant adventure but I’m actually happy spending time listening to music, going to gigs, reading books and spending time in my greenhouse. I’ve also really got into The Rest is politics and The Rest is politics USA podcasts. They have made me realise just what dangerous times we live in. I spent six months volunteering at my local Citizens Advice Bureau which was a real eye opener. The dedication and knowledge of the staff is incredible, though I couldn’t believe the number of people in my home town that need to use their services. I was also staggered to discover that Citizens Advice is a charity and receives no government funding!
Anyways, back to the gigs of 2025.
Hot 8 Brass Band – Brudenell Social Club, Leeds 25th March 2025
Our first gig of 2025 was The Hot 8 Brass band at The Brudenell Social Club, Leeds. As the gig was on a Tuesday, we got a really good deal in a city centre hotel. Pat went shopping while I went to look at a record shop in the Corn Exchange. I was disappointed to find that it has closed down so I was forced to take refuge in The Bower’s Tap on Lower Briggate and drown my sorrows! Pat joined me, wisely deciding that it was a better option than shopping. We moved to a bar recommended by my mate Moz. Tapped is where Moz whiles away the hours while his wife shops in Leeds. We tried out a few of their beers and also the Pizzas which were pretty damn good.
The Brudenell Social Club is a great venue. The drinks are cheap and it always attracts a good crowd. I was disappointed though to find out that the band we were seeing were on in the smaller hall which is not as good as the main room. Lauren Mayberry, from CHVRCHES was playing the main room and it was a sell-out. The Band was recommended by my friend Marko. The Hot 8 Brass Band is a New Orleans–based collective which blends hip-hop, jazz and funk styles with traditional New Orleans brass sounds and are definitely worth seeing live. We were talking to a lady who was there with her husband and disabled son. She told us that their son loves live music and they take him to see lots of bands. He loved tonight’s band, as did we. The band had the enthusiastic audience dancing from the start. Their high energy set was great fun and I’d love to see them again.
I wouldn’t have picked this gig if it wasn’t for Marko’s recommendation so I’m really glad I listened to him!

Steelye Span, Kendal Brewery Arts Centre, 1st May 2025
Our second gig of the year was at Kendal Brewery Arts Centre where we saw Steelye Span. Formed in 1969, Steelye Span were at the forefront of the British Folk Rock movement. There have been many line-up changes over the years but vocalist Maddy Prior has been there for 50 of those years over 3 spells with the band. The band were touring their latest album Conflict. The newer material stood up well against the sprinkling of classics from their 1970’s heyday plus an excellent cover of Robert Wyatt’s Shipbuilding. The sell-out crowd all seemed to really enjoy the show. The audience were a good mix of ages with Birkenstocks the common denominator! (I wasn’t wearing them). The band played two sets which seems to be the current norm.

1. Over The Hills And Far Away
2. Lady Diamond
3. The Sound of the Drum
4. Trees are Whispering

Kingston, NY
on the 8th of May we headed to New York State for the wedding of our niece. We offered to pay for our Daughter Caitlin and her husband to go to the wedding as their wedding present (it was this or a new boiler (They chose wisely and came with us!). I booked a fantastic Airbnb in Kingston, NY where Stephanie and Malachy live. We had a great time in upstate New York. The wedding was a fantastic day with beautiful weather. Steph’s new Father-in-law is a big Dylan fan so I really enjoyed chatting with him about Bob. I was a little taken aback when he asked me if I’d ever met Bob Dylan. It turns out that Chris had met him many times. I enjoyed those stories! We toured around the area which included a visit to a sweetshop in Rhinebeck owned by Paul Rudd, a nostalgic visit to Woodstock where we’d spent a few nights in 20017 and a trip to the Woodstock museum in Bethel which is built on the site of the original festival. We finished our trip with three nights in New York City. I booked The Washington Square Hotel in Greenwich Village which was fabulous. Caitlin’s husband Callum had never been to New York so she really enjoyed showing him the sights while I fulfilled a personal ambition and visited The Chelsea Hotel. I’m glad I’ve been there but $36 for two beers was a bit fucking steep!!

Sparks, Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow June 24th 2025
June saw us heading to Glasgow to see Sparks. Kimono my house was one of the first albums that I bought (1974!) and I have loved it ever since. Surprisingly, it’s the only Sparks album I’ve ever owned. Friends had told me that they were an amazing live act so I finally got around to checking them out. I listened to their latest album MAD a lot and ‘though I liked it, it wasn’t a patch on Kimono my house. They played The Royal Concert Hall which is a fantastic venue with brilliant acoustics. It was a great show, they are very good live. I don’t think I’d go to see them again though, unless they played Kimono my house in its entirety!
Prior to the gig we had a few beers in The Pot Still on Hope Street which was my local when I worked in Glasgow.

The summer months were quiet. No gigs and little travel. High humidity is torture for MS sufferers like me. We managed a trip to Liverpool in September. We intended seeing The Amazing Kappa Band at their regular gig at The Cavern Pub on Mathew Street. When we got there, it was another band who were playing……..Bummer!!! We hung around ans watched the band anyway and they were pretty good if I’m honest. We also got to visit the recently re-opened Ye Cracke which is probably my favourite pub on Earth. John Lennon was a regular punter when he was at Art School. I’m delighted ro report that the pub has been sympathetically made over and retains much of its original charm.
Duncan Ferguson, Crowne Plaza, Chester, 4th October 2025
Our next show was An Evening with Duncan Ferguson in Chester. Big Dunc is one of my football heroes. I used to love watching him play at Goodison Park . I’m disappointed that he only got three games as caretaker manager at Everton. I think he’d have done better than Frank Lampard. I also hope that one day he’ll be back on the coaching staff at Everton helping us to finally develop strikers who can score goals!
Pat had bought me tickets for my birthday. We were on the second row and also had tickets that gave us chance to meet the big man, get my copy of his autobiography signed, and have my photo took with him.
It was a great night, I loved every minute as did everyone else in the audience.I was in hysterics when he told the stories about the two attempted burglaries at his place. My heart goes our to the thieves, I would love to have seen their faces when they realised they were trying to rob Big Dunc!!!
It was great to sing the old songs loudly! One of the best nights of my life.

The following day, we stayed in Liverpool at The Dixie Dean Hotel. We dumped our bags and Pat headed off to Liverpool One whilst I headed to The Denbigh Castle to watch the Everton game. We were playing Crystal Palace. The first half was dull to say the least, Crystal Palace went into the break 1-0 up. The second half wasn’t much better and the nerves were jangling until we were awarded a penalty on 75 minutes which was duly dispatched by Illman N’Diaye. We were the better team but didn’t look like scoring from open play. The pub erupted when Jack Grealish scored the winner in the 93 minute. Suddenly all was well with the world. We stopped in at The Vernon Arms on the way back to our hotel and were sat next to a bunch of Palace fans. They agreed that Everton were the best team on the day.
In the evening we went for an excellent curry at The Sultan’s Palace which is virtually next door to The Dixie Dean.
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall 29th October 2025
It was back to Glasgow for our next gig. This was the music event of the year for me. Gillian Welch at the Royal Concert Hall. We first saw her at Manchester Apollo in 2011, the last time she toured the UK. We took the train to Glasgow which is definitely the best way to travel. In the afternoon we had a few beers in the legendary Horseshoe Bar before heading to the merchant city to eat at Koolba, one of our favourite Indian restaurants. We had a superb meal which set things up nicely for the evening.
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings were truly brilliant! They opened with Elvis Presley Blues which was a great start to the show. They played two sets with songs from their latest (brilliant) album Woodland Studio heavily featured. They covered Wharf Rat by the Grateful Dead which was a pleasant surprise.
The highlight of the night was a cover of White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane, the last of five encores! This was one of the best shows that I’ve ever seen.

Mary Gauthier, Gosforth Civic Theatre, 2nd November 2025
Four days later we headed to Gosforth to see Mary Gauthier. She was playing The Civic theatre as part of her UK tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of her debut album Drag Queens in Limousines.
We had a few beers in Gosforth in the afternoon. Newcastle were playing West Ham so the pubs were heaving. We watched the match in The Gosforth Hotel. This was the pub where the first copy of Viz was sold in 1979. West Ham deservedly beat the horse punchers 3-1, we left as the game ended and headed for the Chinese restaurant next door.
The Gosforth Civic theatre was a decent venue, drinks were cheap and the crowd seemed like decent people. Jamie Harris opened the show with a short set. This was the best show I’ve ever seen her perform. Her new material sounds really good so I’m looking forward to her next album. Mary Gauthier joined her and embarked on her headlining set. I think this was the 7th time that we’ve seen her live. I was a little disappointed with this show, Mary seemed a little disinterested. Drag queens in limousines was probably the highlight of the show. Last of the hobo kings felt laboured as did many of tonight’s songs. Mercy now was the encore as usual. We didn’t hang around after the show and headed back to our hotel. We got back 5 minutes after the bar closed which pretty much summed up the day!
I’ll go and see Mary Gauthier again when she next tours the UK but if the show is no better then it will probably be my last time.

Bob Dylan, Glasgow SEC Armadillo, 16th November 2025
My niece messaged me to say that her Father-in-law had got us tickets to see Bob Dylan at The SEC Armadillo in Glasgow. To say I was shocked was an understatement! I was bowled over by this kind gesture. I booked a room at the Voco Grand Central which is the hotel on Glasgow Central station. I always stayed there when I worked in Glasgow in the late 90’s. Back then it wasn’t quite so grand. We travelled up by rail again which is so relaxing. After dropping our bags at the hotel we had a quick beer in a bar on Buchanan street before heading to Dishoom where I had booked lunch. Dishoom are a chain of upmarket Indian restaurants. Friends had told me that the food is great. The restaurant was heaving! There were people queuing for tables. Fortunately, as we had booked, we were led straight straight to our table. The food was excellent, we will definitely return.
Chris had messaged me to say that our tickets would be at the box office. To say I was nervous was an understatement. I needn’t have worried, our tickets were there and we had great seats! We had a couple of eye wateringly expensive drinks in the venue before taking our seats. Bob was amazing. He still plays a lot of songs from Rough and Rowdy ways but his set featured some of his classics which were given ‘alternative’ arrangements. After the show we headed back to our hotel. There were lots of Dylan fans in there. We drank several astonishingly expensive cocktails before the bar closed. I can’t Chris enough for getting us these tickets, we had a fantastic time.

Bill Ryder-Jones, Kendal Brewery Arts Centre, 29th November 2025
There was one more gig in November which took us back to Kendal Brewery Arts Centre to see Bill Ryder-Jones. Bill was a founder member of The Coral and stayed with them until 2008. As well as making his own music, he is a successful record producer. His Iechyd Da album was one of the best records released in 2024.
At tonight’s sell-out show he was accompanied by Cellist Evelyn Halls who was heavily pregnant at the time. It was a great show in an excellent venue. I look forward to Bill’s next album.

Katherine Priddy, Barrow Library, December 7th 2025
The first of three gigs in December was in Barrow Library of all places! There is an organisation called Get it Loud in Libraries that arranges gigs across the country. The gig we saw was by Katherine Priddy. We had seen her before when she supported Richard Thompson at Manchester Opera House in 2021. She has recorded a couple of well received albums with a third due out early 2026.
At the time of this show I was doing some Voluntary work at the Library so it felt a little strange going to my workplace to see a gig. Katherine Priddy played an excellent set and came across as a genuinely nice person. I’m looking forward to the release of her new album as the new songs she played sounded really good.
It’s worth checking out Get it Loud in Libraries – Live music in local libraries to see if there are any shows in your area.

Robert Plant, Manchester Apollo Theatre, 15th December 2025
Next up was a trip to one of my favourite venues in one of my least favourite cities. We headed to Manchester to see Robert Plant and Saving Grace at the Apollo theatre. We stayed at a Premier Inn very close to Piccadilly station, we got a good rate and parking was reasonably priced. After dumping our bags we headed out. As usual for Manchester it was pissing it down. We had a couple of beers in the Head of Steam. Although these are a bar chain, the beer is good and very reasonably priced for Manchester. I’m not keen on Manchester record shops as I find them over-priced and I certainly had no intention of visiting the Christmas markets, so I resigned myself to an afternoon eating and drinking………bummer! We headed to The Old Monkey on Portland Street next. This is a proper old pub which serves a good range of Joseph Holt beers. There was a good crowd in despite it being a wet Monday afternoon. Chinatown is a two minute walk away so we headed for the Happy Seasons restaurant on Faulkner Street where we had an excellent meal before going back to the hotel for a much needed power nap.
The queue for the Apollo was enormous, no doubt due to the pub next door having sadly closed down. We headed to the O2 lounge, one of the benefits of my over-priced phone contract. We got a couple of scandalously priced drinks and sat down. We chatted with a really nice couple who were serious music lovers. By the time it was time to move into the theatre I was close to bankruptcy!
This was the third time that we’ve seen Robert Plant with Saving Grace. There debut album is one of the best released in 2025. It was a fantastic show, the songs from the album stood up well against the Led Zeppelin songs that were scattered across the set. I have seen Robert Plant in Led Zeppelin, with Page and Plant, solo, with Band of Joy, and now with Saving Grace. At the ripe old age of 78, he is still a fantastic performer. Saving Grace are all fantastic musicians and Suzi Dian is a great vocalist whose voice blends perfectly with Plant. She follows Alison Kraus and Patty Griffin, two other very talented women who have made albums with Plant.
Post show, we headed back to the hotel where I was delighted to find that the bar was still open. The rest of the night is a blur!

Slade, Newcastle City Hall, 19th December 2025
The last gig of 2025 was in Newcastle on Friday 19th December………blackeye Friday!! I used to love Newcastle but the older I get, the less I like it. I worked with many Geordie’s, which is hardly surprising given I spent my working life in shipyards. I was lucky enough to work with Tom Scott, a genuinely great man. A proud Geordie, and a proud shipbuilder. I mourn the softening of the Geordie accent. I haven’t heard anyone saying hadaway and shite in years!
Our hotel was on the quayside. After checking in we walked to The Crown Posada which is a great pub that is full of naval and shipbuilding ephemera. This is a great place, I always raise a glass to Tom Scott when I’m in here. We visited a couple of soulless quayside bars before heading to The Bridge Tavern where I had booked lunch.
Our hotel was next to a Weatherspoons over-looking the Tyne so we nipped in for a beer before going to the gig. Despite it being a very cold night, the young folk of Newcastle were dressed as If they were on holiday on the Spanish Coast in the middle of summer!
Our final gig of the year was Slade at Newcastle City Hall. Slade were my favourite band from when I was 9 years old. As my musical taste matured I kind of dropped Slade but still loved their early stuff. I never got to see them live when Noddy Holder was still fronting the band, tonight’s gig would be my first time seeing them. I had read that this would be there final tour so I felt I needed to get tickets.
Newcastle City Hall is a great venue, I have fond memories of seeing Mott the Hoople there in 2013.
We headed for the bar and ordered staggeringly expensive drinks. We got talking to a proper Geordie guy who had great stories of gigs he had seen and places he’d travelled to.
I enjoyed the show, we sang along to all the songs, but I couldn’t escape the feeling that it felt like seeing a Slade tribute act. I guess that is a tribute to the brilliance of Noddy Holder. We left as they started playing Merry Christmas Everybody. As it was a sell-out, I wanted to grab a taxi and get back to the quayside. The city was strangely subdued for a black eye Friday, I guess the fact the Horse Punchers were playing Chelsea the next day with a 12 o’clock kick off explained it.
We had a few more drinks in ‘Spoons before calling it a night.

It feels good to start blogging again. It was difficult getting started but I enjoyed writing this piece. 2025 was an uneven year for gigs. It only really only got started in late October and the end of the year felt crowded. We have got a few gigs already booked this year; Love at Kendal Brewey Arts, The Delines at Bury Met, Imelda May at the Tung auditorium, Liverpool, and Emmylou Harris at The Philharmonic Theatre Liverpool. Pat and Caitlin also have tickets to see Bon Jovi at Wembley.
We hope to take a couple of holidays abroad in 2026. I fancy Albania, but I can only find flights from London. We are also looking at Budapest, Malta and Portugal. I’ve also been looking at Canada, however that may prove too expensive. Trips to Belfast and Galway are also on the list.
I will also look to do more volunteer work this year. I’ve been trying to find a suitable role but I still haven’t found what I’m looking for…………………..Sorry!!
The world feels a scary place to live in. Nationalism is on the rise in Europe with Reform leading in the polls at home. The USA is seemingly turning against its allies, which doesn’t bode well for NATO. Hopefully this global realignment can happen without too many more lives lost. I’d love to see the end of war in Ukraine and I pray for an end to the suffering of Palestinians and for a mutually acceptable solution to be found.
If you made it to the end of this piece, Thank you!
